So here is my latest piece from Flash!Friday Vol. 3-12. In addition to the photo prompt, the story had to tackle the theme Man versus Nature.
“Will you go with me mommy?”
The father can’t really describe the terror in his eyes.
He shook his head again and again.
The doors had opened; the father had tossed the four butts in his pocket. He knows he listened to Metallica ‘ s “Ride the Lightning,” but can’t remember it.
All he really remembers is the hazards reflecting in the ambulance before him, the ambulance he’d followed through the rainy Friday traffic-hour traffic, as slow as an ocean liner on sand, while his thoughts raced.
What’s wrong with my son!?
“Will you go with me mommy?” he begged after the paramedic asked him if he wanted to go for a ride.
The father got a text from his mother saying the ambulance was going to take him to the hospital. She’d talked to his psychiatrist.
He’d seen, he told us, something in his head. It it invited him to hell. He saw his own face behind it, bloody, with an evil grin.
The school psychologist called him autistic.
The computer said it begins in utero, in the first eight weeks.
What is a father, let alone a six year old, to do against nature?
For now, I, the father, can only wait.
